Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a special treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid 20%) activated with the correct wavelength of blue light. These treatments remove sun damaged pre-cancerous zones and spots called actinic keratosis. Sun damage, fine lines, and blotchy pigmentation are also improved because of the positive effect of Levulan and the light treatment. Photodynamic Therapy also has the unique ability to minimize pores and reduce oil glands, effectively treating stubborn acne vulgaris, acne rosacea and improving the appearance of some acne scars.
Following PDT, the treated area can appear red with peeling and/or crusting for 2-7 days. It is imperative that you remain indoors and stay out of sunlight or even bright indoor light for 24 hours after treatment because the Levulan makes the treated area more sensitive to light.
To achieve maximum improvement of pre-cancerous (actinic keratosis), sun damage, skin tone and texture, a series of 2-3 treatments 4 weeks apart is most effective. Additional treatments can be done at periodic intervals in the future to maintain the rejuvenated appearance of the skin. Acne may require 3-5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart yet, some patient’s find adequate results after just one treatment.
